Who We Are
We are a small and welcoming congregation with a strong emphasis on preaching and teaching the Word of God and developing believers into fully devoted followers of Christ.
Organized around 1830, the Petersburg Cumberland Presbyterian Church has always been part of the town of Petersburg, Tennessee. We are active in our community with prayer, ministry, outreach events, and mission work. We are, as the name indicates, part of the Cumberland Presbyterian Church, an evangelical, protestant, denomination with ministries and churches around the world. You can learn more about the CPC at this website: https://cpcmc.org/
We would be considered by most as a small, conservative, and active rural church. Most of our regular attendees are middle-aged or older. We invest seriously in ministry to children and take special effort to include them in the life of the church and ensure their safety.
Dress for worship is casual, and worship services are reverent but relaxed. Visitors find it comfortable to join in, and children are encouraged to participate. We have a piano and organ to accompany congregational singing which includes traditional hymns as well as contemporary worship songs. Sermons are usually around thirty minutes long and Bible based. Worship usually ends by noon.
The front of the church building faces Russell Street, and we have a small parking lot on that side, but most people park at the rear of the property which borders High St. The sanctuary seats around 100 and is pretty typical for churches built in the 1800s. We have worship services in the sanctuary. One adult class also meets in it. The church basement is completely renovated, clean, well lit, and suitable for Sunday School classes. All children’s classes are downstairs along with one of the adult classes. We also have a spacious fellowship hall that is used for meals, educational workshops, community events, and an adult Sunday School class.
What we Believe
We hold that the Holy Scriptures, both Old and New Testaments, are the inspired Word of God, the only earthly infallible rule for faith and practice as the Apostolic faith handed down to us. We study, teach, and preach it earnestly. We expect church leaders to equip church members for ministry and for church members to provide ministry for one another as well as to those outside our household of faith.

Believers, if God is drawing you closer to Him, deepening your understanding of the Scripture, and increasing your faith, then you need a church home. Participating in the life of a local congregation is essential to growing as a disciple of Jesus Christ, and we are committed to living and sharing the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Is the Holy Spirit leading you here?
If you are not sure what you believe and want to check out what church is about, then you will find our congregation a safe and welcoming place to explore and discover. Your presence, questions, and participation are all welcome.
If you have a church home but appreciate Bible-based sermons and lessons then check out our sermons page. You can search by topic and/or text.
FAQs
- “What time is Sunday service?” Worship begins at 10:45
- “What time is Sunday School and for what ages?” All classes begin at 9:30. We have classes for all ages including three classes for adults.
- “What should I wear?” Most participants are casually dressed.
- “What door should I come in?” Great question! If you enter the sanctuary from the High Street parking area, you will come in at the “front” of the auditorium behind the pulpit. If you come up the steps from Russell Street, you will enter behind the pews. Either is fine, but if you are late you may draw more attention coming in from High Street! We don’t care! You are welcome anyway and anytime
- “What is your style of worship?” Our order of worship is in keeping with the Reformed tradition so fairly typical for Protestant churches. The attitude is reverent but not stuffy. We want everyone to encounter God during worship services.
