Memorial Oak Planting
At the end of our worship service on Sunday March 20th, 2016 our congregation gathered outside in the chilly sunshine for a memorial service to remember the faithful men and women of Petersburg Cumberland Presbyterian Church who have passed on to be with our Lord. The names of previous members, elders and ministers were called out and two Willow Oak trees were planted in their honor. We are building upon their works of love and service. The trees will grow to shade a grassy play area that future generations can enjoy.
As a reminder of God’s faithfulness to the Petersburg Cumberland Presbyterian Church and of our call to share the Gospel and rebuild what has been broken down we read Isaiah 61:1-4.
The Spirit of the Lord [a]God is upon me,
Because the Lord has anointed me
To bring good news to the [b]afflicted;
He has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted,
To proclaim liberty to captives
And [c]freedom to prisoners;
2 To proclaim the favorable year of the Lord
And the day of vengeance of our God;
To comfort all who mourn,
3 To grant those who mourn in Zion,
Giving them a garland instead of ashes,
The oil of gladness instead of mourning,
The mantle of praise instead of a spirit of fainting.
So they will be called oaks of righteousness,
The planting of the Lord, that He may be glorified.
4 Then they will rebuild the ancient ruins,
They will raise up the former devastations;
And they will repair the ruined cities,
The desolations of many generations.
